Remember you can’t give away what you don’t possess yourself.

Find inspiration and the tools every 21st century leader, coach and parent needs in this realistic and gripping story of a successful CEO named Lance Marshall, who has lost perspective and is now struggling to balance the demands of work, his three kids and his marriage. After another verbal fight with his wife and to keep his life from unraveling, he decides to heed his wife’s advice to reach out to the man who gave him the foundational principles that launched his path to success, Coach Moore, his high school football coach. Back where Lance first found success, (Coach) re-acquaints him with the 5 Non-Negotiables or secrets to exceptional leadership. Coach Moore leads Lance on a challenging tour of teaching and self examination as he sends him to visit five former players who are now very successful leaders in their own right. As each principle is laid out to Lance during each visit, there is one catch… he must apply what he has leaned within 24 hours or the visits are over. Will Lance be able to apply what he’s learned to change his life, becoming a true Legacy Builder for the 21st century or will he succumb to the unrelenting life of being a results driven, bottom line leader?

The Legacy Builder Five Timeless Principles for 21st Century Leaders eBook Rod Olson

In the midst of the pressures of life and work, it is easy to get caught in unhelpful behavioural patterns. In this book, Rod Olson tells the story of one man trapped in a busy career, causing him to neglect his family and relationships with people around him. The man's wife finally persuades him to consult an old mentor, who arranges a series of conversations relating to key aspects of successful living, for someone who aspires to become a "legacy builder".

The principles identified by the characters in the book as "non-negotiables" are:

* Specify the win: Decide each day what will amount to a "win" at work and at home
* Simplicity in a complex world: Focus on the things that you can control, particularly attitude and effort
* Be a three-dimensional leader: Maintain high competency levels, motivate team members, and capture people's hearts while holding them accountable
* The power of "Speaking Greatness": Motivate by inspiration rather than fear
* Value people over productivity: Winning at work is secondary to winning in life

While the advice which the author provides is not particularly novel, it is still advice which most people need to be reminded about, and this relatively short book conveys the necessary information in a creative and entertaining manner.

The Legacy Builder Five Timeless Principles for 21st Century Leaders eBook Rod Olson Reviews

We are all leaders to some degree because of our life roles as parents, aunts/uncles, grandparents, friend, managing our lives, etc. How we choose to interact with others determines our legacy. This book is a timeless reminder of what really matters. If people matter most to God, shouldn't they matter most to us? Thank-you Rod Olson for speaking a fresh word my heart!
I'm the mother of 3 boys so I understand the value of team sports and the skills learned from it. This was an excellent story and a reminder that even when career and life gets in the way but we can always stop and reset. I found that it applied to my life and career right now. It was a short read with powerful and purposeful next steps. I highly recommend it.
Olson reminds us to stick with the basics, day after day. Valuing people and process at home and at work gives us a chance to leave a positive legacy. THINK (true-helpful-inspiring-necessary-kind) back to mentors you admired or appreciated. Can we be more like them?

"The Legacy Builder" is more in the simple story style of Jon Gordon than similar genre books from John C. Maxwell, Darren Hardy, or David Cottrell but well-worth the hour or two invested reading it. What went well? Can I do more of that?
I have now read both of Ron Olson's books and can tell you without hesitation you should do yourself a favor and read them. The thoughts presented will encourage you and will make you pause and reflect , learning from the past and striving toward the prize set before you. I am a Lutheran pastor, the lessons taught apply to my life and to the life of God's congregation. Approach life with a white belt mentality and God will lead you to be the best you can be , all for His glory. Thank you Ron. As a relocated Pittsburgh native, I must add Let's Go Bucs! Thanks you for your influence on my favorite ball club!
I had no interest in the title of this book. It was a simple leadership book that might be nice. It has 5 points that I could quickly read and move on to the next book. Some of you are giggling now. There is no way you should be able to read this and not be touched.
It's not your standard "how to" book. This book, if you let it, will challenge where you are and take you to honest greatness. Don't get trapped by if only I had known this before. Many of the lessons you do know.
The author takes us on a journey that reads like a novel. After each non-negotiable, take time to chew. You will be the leader you want...
This book feels like an old friend from page one. The writing is honest, heart felt, and incredibly intimate. Usually these stories make you feel like you're reading a hallmark card - but this one kept me gripped. And because I was so invested in the main characters fate, it made the 5 main lessons stick out to me that much more.
I've found myself in similar patches of life - where it feels like I'm dissatisfied with everything and the whole world is against me. It was a bit a shock to read it from someone else's perspective. It made me appreciate those in my life so much more. I highly recommend this book for any man going through a difficult time. This will help you get your priorities straight.
I must say this wasn't what I had expected of a leadership book.

Lance is the CEO of his now grown company which has been recently acquired. He's a husband, father to two children (with one of them autistic), former football star and a very busy man. After losing control over his life his wife calls up his old coach, coach O, to help Lance get his head back in the game.

Lance takes a trip out to see coach and this turns out to be a series of days of learning with each day having it's own lesson from coach with practical application. At the end of it Lance returns home a changed man having learnt vital leadership lessons from coach and the people coach sends him to.

I liked the use of a story to communicate the 5 main lessons on leadership i.e
Specify the win.
Simplicity.
Be a 3-dimensional leader.
The power of speaking greatness.
Value people over productivity.

This is more of a short self-help book rather than a tome focused on leadership. While I'm biased against peppy self-help books there are valuable lessons here to be gleaned by anyone who can stand a book written in this way. A recommended read for anyone interested in taking a quick look at some leadership tips.
